FOKOFPOLISIEKAR
fokof film wins audience award at festival !

ONS WEN !!!!!!!!!!

seems to be the theme song for this project :)
that and praying for miracles.
We won the audience award at encounters!
you probably allready know that because filipa has this amazing ability to inform and connect the world, she is pioneering producing in this country and nobody even knows it yet.
anyway,
Its the only award they give and so it is super special. Now we can gooi those leaves on our poster for the ster kinekor launch countrywide. hopefully it's just the first of many.

HUGE thank you to all the people who came to the screenings and sold out the entire festival. we are making history. you and me and that guy selling you a phone charger.
This country is so alive right now.
We went to a filmmaking forum last night and the 3 of us (fil me and apples) drove away feeling so strongly that this is the place to be producing and creating. the forum was supposed to start with a talk via skype video by some guy who acted in D9 (the peter jackson ink baby) all the way from San Francisco! but the skype link didnt work or he was offline or something. anyway.. we all wanted to hear word from the 'outside' or 'over-the-seas' of self belief.
it didnt work... we where left with ourselves in a studio and we spoke about all things film, being entertained and empowered by the passion of lou venter and the quietly psychotic intensity of simon spoon. we heard frustrated writers and wisdom of those that have been in the trenches for ever. in the end we didnt really miss our link to the over-sea-er. we drank some red wine and got pissed, we ate amazing little morsels from a local catering company filled with big smiles, a business card and hope for what may be.

i love it here.
this is home.
fuck yeah.
thanks to everyone who came and voted
also thanks to the people who didnt vote cos they were zoned out
by the film and floated out into the night. i was sitting on the floor by the door and i saw you. that made the festival for me.

please join the fan page on faceplant if you want to know whats going on with the national release, road shows, international screenings etc. its the only way we can really stay in contact with you so sign up.

have a good day.

influences poster

i found this copy of one of the first fokof posters that the band made in early 2003.
it lists all the influences that the band had growing up.
this poster is what inspired the montage in the begining of the film with he-man footage, fw de klerk, thundercats, nelson mandela etc...
It also inspired the idea of the vhs 'mixtape' that is used to transition between scenes and have leftover glitches of hollywood
interspersed in the film like when you play an old vhs tape and in the film suddenly there is a weird thing where the tape fucks out and an older previously taped piece of television or a movie or porn flashes on for a second or two. i like that idea. that those influences from america are depicted in such an organic way. it also just reminds me of that time in the 90's growing up with shitty vhs tapes that the machine ate more times than it played.

walking down the corridor and hearing your film

image courtesy of Nigel Moore and voice mag. (nigel is the designer responsible for the fokof films image - including this site) thanks nig!

Its underway!  the first screening was ridiculous. thank you to everyone who came - everyone in that cinema made it really special. It seemed like everyone really enjoyed the film and there was much whooping and hollering. at one stage i went for a pee and a smoke to calm down and i remember walking back down that little cinema corridor and turning the corner and seeing my film on the big screen with a packed cinema and  everyone just mesmerized - i turned around and walked down it again just to make sure it was real and to feel it again. The Q+A went well and allowed us to speak about the more serious issues in the film and the process of making it. i was so proud to sit there with Apples (DOP) and Fil (producer) filmmaking is such a collaborative process and i often feel that directors should share that with people more. the Q+A was followed by an after party at the shack which was mental.
pics will be posted soon courtesy of we-are-awesome!

looking forward to the next 3 screenings with new audiences. all shows have been sold out before the festival even started!
Now all we need is for people like Barry Ronge to say the name out in full and to realize this film is about more than just getting drunk and rock and roll.

it has been such an incredible journey. During the Q+A, for the first time in my life  i felt truly that this was what i am meant to be doing. i will never forget looking out at all the people and speaking without fear from a place deep inside that tells me - this is the point, this is why i make film.

blunt mag wrote a cool article !

There's been some crazy press interest so far and the film isn't even public yet. i am constantly surprised at how much people relate to this story and can claim an ownership of it even before they have seen the film. It is almost as though people have made this film in their minds before they have even seen it.
That does add some pressure and nerves but in many ways its such a confirmation of why we felt the responsibility to capture this forever. It reinforces my belief that in some way this is an important story.
anyway.
below is a link to one of my personal favorites (not because it features my ass)

WORLD PREMIERE !!!

 ONE MORE SLEEP !

The time has come ! tomorrow the film will be screened for the first time to a paying public. cant wait. all the screenings at encounters have practically sold out. the opening night sold out in a day!
to everyone who has tickets . we'll see you there !
(after party at the SHACK by the way - gonna be mental)
to those who cant make it , see you at the other screenings (also with after parties at the shack :)

the film has been confirmed to be released nationwide on Ster Kinekor on the 4th of September 2009 which is so incredibly exciting and i think breaks a lot of new ground for local filmmakers and culture generators.
A local documentary on the big screen in the main cinemas !! ridiculous.

there will be a Q&A with the filmmakers after the screening tomorrow night which should be an interesting discussion.

see you there !
